The story “Bride of Frankenstein”
written in 1816 reflected the beliefs of the society and status of science at
that time. The “Bride of Frankenstein” looks like a sequel of the story
“Frankenstein”. It depicted the sad and miserable story of a monster that was
created in a scientific experiment for raising a dead.
The story showed a lonely side of a
monster that was haunted and hated by people, and so he ended up hurting them.
The monster only wants friendship and affection by humans but in the end, he
failed to have it. This part of the story somewhat reflected the morality at
that time where discrimination was rampant. Even today, people still judge
others based on their physical appearance and it leads to broken human
relationship and discrimination. Morality can shape a society since the belief
of the people inside a community constitutes the main ideology of a certain
society. Morality can also build or break bonds and relationship among people
inside a society, which in turn can harm or benefit the community.
On the other hand, the “Bride of
Frankenstein” also showed the crude science at that time where electricity was
not still available at every home and was only harnessed through lightning. It
shows the humble development of electricity, from kites harnessing the
electricity of lightning. As I watch a film this film, I realized how important
the development of electricity was in progressing science and technology for
the present, modernized world. The story also reflected the hope of the people
for science and for the innovation it can bring to answer the mysteries of life
and to ease the living the humans at the time it was written.
On the
movie, the monster was dumb and it can’t speak well but on the original story
or on the book, it can carry a decent conversation. I think the writer of the
movie that adapted the story made the character of the monster that way in
order to emphasize the morality part of which the monster was
discriminated. Aside from its horrible
appearance, the monster was made dumb to make it look more miserable and
discriminated in the story. This tactic of the writer works since the monster
looks miserable rather than horrifying, and so the moral of the story can be
easily seen.
